Fiber is the technology used to deliver the service, the speed can vary. Gigabit is about the highest you can get at the consumer level today but you can also just get 100 or 300 or whatever the isp will sell you if you don’t need the extra speed. I have also heard stories of people having it buried and getting service a month or so later. I think my house was one of the first in the neighborhood where they started, was also the first person to get fiber in my neighborhood lol..
